Nathaniel Perry Instructor:Regina Flores English 9: period 13 November 2015 Imagine being an outcast just for being you shunned, abused, bullied all because of your sexuality. This happens to a lot of male athletes just because they are gay. Teammates make fun of you, fans hate you, and coaches think less of you all for being comfortable with who you are. But not all people have the same mindset everyone is not homophobic or let your lifestyle determine how they treat you. The NFL conducted a survey with 51 players 83% of the (44 people) players said they would not mind having a gay teammate, this shows that not all people are going to treat gay players as outcast just because of their sexuality. Another question the survey asked is “Would an openly gay player feel comfortable in the locker room?” 25 players answered true and 21 players answered false. The 21 players who answered false noticed their teammates acting different around gay teammates. But the 25 players who answered true showed that people are more accepting of their teammates and it wouldn’t bother them to change in front of their gay teammates. The next statement in the the survey gets a little more personal than the last two questions. The statement asked, “Would you shower around a gay teammate?” 39 players answered true , 12 players answered false. These answers show that some athletes are comfortable with their teammates no matter what their sexuality is . But it also shows that some athletes aren’t sure how they feel about taking a shower with an openly gay teammate , but as long as they’re comfortable with their own sexuality it shouldn’t matter. This statement also ties into the last question, of “Would an openly gay teammate feel comfortable in the locker room?” This shows that the majority of athletes wouldn’t mind having a gay teammate in the locker room. This is an issue for gay athletes all over the world. They struggle to fit in with teammates, fans, and coaches who do not understand them and who they are. These people are afraid of allowing change into their lives and into the sports they love. All in all I want you to come away from this conversation knowing that gay people athletes are not are no different from you and me.
